26.661 — Chess Name Plates
The client asked for a complete interior signage design for a private chess club, from initial concept to final installation. The brief called for premium materials built to last 50 years or more, a subtle and elegant design that matches the club’s darker, sophisticated interior, and messages that go beyond the game itself and carry a deeper meaning. The budget was not limited.
The plates are made from stainless steel (Inox 304), cut with electric sheet metal shears and bent into a tray shape. The tray hides the mounting profile, so the plates appear to float on the wall with no visible fixings. The base colours, RAL 8017 chocolate brown and RAL 9005 matt jet black, recall the contrast of the chessboard and its pieces while blending into the club’s dark interior. The messages are screen printed in RAL 9016 traffic white using 2K paints, which gives a clean, strong contrast, depth and a durable finish.
The two messages give the space depth, character and an intellectual identity. The first links chess and life, reminding the reader that decisions on the board often reflect a wider philosophy of thinking, risk and courage:
“Each opening is a question posed to the universe: Will you play it safe, or risk everything for greatness? The answer lies not in the moves, but in the heart of the one who commands them.”
The second, “Sac, sac, mate!”, directly references Bobby Fischer and his attacking approach, where sacrifices and precise play break down the defence and lead to checkmate. Together, the two messages balance reflection and expressive force, turning the plates into more than a visual element. They carry the atmosphere, attitude and identity of the space.
